Award-winning Memory Care Brings New Life to Seniors with Alzheimer’s

The Haven in The Summit is a specialized memory care community located in the prestigious master-planned community of the Summit in northeast Columbia, South Carolina. Their nationally-recognized Bridge to Rediscovery memory care program brings vibrancy back to the lives of individuals with early, middle, and late stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Their building design is setup like an old town square, and the building has three wings with lots of room for residents to safely walk throughout the building. Residents are always up and about and don’t feel trapped in a small place or house because there is so much room to move around, both inside and out securely, without the risk of them getting lost.

Things We Like about The Haven:

  • Town Square and the ice cream parlor that the residents love
  • Outdoor spaces are beautiful and welcoming
  • Hands-on, caring Management Team led by Gary Tyson who is not only an administrator, but a Licensed Master Social Worker with a compassion that shows in his interaction with the residents and families
  • Caregivers and all of the staff interact with guests and residents and are trained to engage and care for the residents regardless of their position
  • Comprehensive treatment of people with memory care issues from the building design to the choice of dinner ware.
  • Veterans are recognized, not only on the Wall of Honor, but during numerous activities and holidays. Veterans are offered a discount on their rent as well.

Rent and Care:

Rent is comparable to cost of memory care in other assisted living communities. Veterans are offered a special discount on rent as a thank you for their service.

Types of Accommodations:

Private and Semi-Private Rooms in either the Charleston, Columbia or Greenville wings which are all connected by the town square.

Socialization and Activities:

At The Haven, you won’t find residents sitting in chairs watching TV all day. Residents are engaged in personalized, purposeful activities every day. All staff – from nurses to chefs to housekeepers – are trained in their innovative program. Everyone works together to stimulate memories and maximize the independence of every resident. Even the planned design of the building – set like a town square with different neighborhoods – encourages independence and triggers memories. Residents can wander freely and safely in a community setting that feels familiar. They have opportunities to make personal choices. They maintain the dignity and sense of self that everyone, including your loved one, deserves. Activities include such things as bingo of course, but the residents also have the opportunity to help with special crafts as well if they like such as soap making and making rosemary olive oil from the herb garden.

Not only is the inside of the building beautiful and well designed, there are three secure outdoor areas that open out from the screened in porches. In addition there is a lovely butterfly garden and a children’s playground area where the grandchildren can play when they come to visit their grandparents or great grandparents.

Meals:

Meal time is a special treat at The Haven. Three nutritious meals are served daily along with snacks. Because the residents get to stay so active, they work hard to make sure the residents have plenty of opportunities to take in good food and keep their weight up. They go so far as to play a certain song on the sound system before each meal to stimulate residents to know it’s meal time and have bright, contrasting colors of dinnerware so that it is easier for residents to visually distinguish the dinnerware and napkins from the table and tablecloth.
