Community Type: Alzheimer’s and Memory Care

Colonial Gardens is a dedicated Memory Care community in West Columbia, SC that just opened in April 2015. This retirement community is owned and managed by JEA Senior Living. Beautifully decorated private and semi-private rooms, living spaces and wide halls are obvious when you tour, but you’ll find the dementia-care that they provide is as exclusive and impressive as the décor. Meaningful Moments® is their distinctive dementia-care program designed to honor the individual life story of each resident. An integral part of this program is interviewing the resident as well as their family and loved ones to find out more about who the person was before they developed dementia. This helps in having meaningful conversations and activities of interest based on the interests and life history of each resident. In their own words, they provide “a special place where those with memory loss can live a comfortable life free of expectations that typically surround them.”

Colonial Gardens is leasing apartments at this time. Rent starts at $4,600 with all care levels included in the rent.

Colonial Gardens offers a wide variety of activities throughout the day not only as larger planned events for all the residents, but in small group settings or one-on-one activities as well. These activities are designed to integrate with their Meaningful Moments program and the residents currently in their care.

Meals

Three delicious meals a day and snacks are provided. In addition, they go above and beyond with residents that have special requirements. For example, we were told that residents who require pureed meals are presented with plates that make the meal appetizing.

Miscellaneous Facts about Colonial Gardens

Colonial Gardens Alzheimer’s Special Care Center of West Columbia is owned by JEA Senior Living. JEA Senior Living was started by Jerry Erwin whose mother Margaret lived with Alzheimer’s for seven years. Seeing a need for specialized and high quality dementia care, he and his family opened their first community in 1993 and now have over fifty properties and serve hundreds of residents and their families.
